Susan has traveled and lived in many places, but most of her time has been spent in Tennessee. She attended The Appalachian Center for Crafts at  Tennessee Tech University where she studied Ceramics. In 1999, she  graduated with a B.F.A. After a few years of more travel and working, Susan settled down and started her own studio at home in Oak Ridge, TN. With several years of working in the studio, Susan enrolled in the local college to study graphic design, a love she was eager to learn more about. Currently, Susan is working in the studio and is a freelancing graphic designer. the processSusan throws white stoneware on the potter's wheel. First painting hand-mixed, colorful slips on the damp pots Susan then lightly carves the outline of each design using a sgraffito tool. The pots dry and are fired in a bisque firing. The pots are glazed with a food-safe clear glaze and fired a second time to mid-range temperature, about 2200 degrees. Firing to this temperature allows the pottery to maintain a bright range of color and yet possess the durability of high-fired ware. This pottery does not contain lead or other harmful materials.
